Ryunosuke:
Yes, My Lord. The defence is ready.

バンジークス:
検察側····しかるべく。

Van Zieks:
At your discretion, My Lord.

サイバンチョ:
····よろしい。それでは、事件の説明をおねがいします。

Judge:
Very well. I hereby call on the prosecution to introduce the case.

バンジークス:
事件が起こったのは、降りつづいた雪のやんだ、2日前の深夜のこと。

Van Zieks:
The incident in question took place two days ago, late at night, when the ground was blanketed with snow.

バンジークス:
現場は、被告人····シャーロック・ホームズ氏の自宅。

Van Zieks:
The location of the incident was the residence of the accused, Mr Herlock Sholmes.

サイバンチョ:
ほお····あの有名な、ベーカー街221Bのお部屋ですかな。

Judge:
Indeed? The now famous address of number 221B Baker Street, was it?

バンジークス:
その “有名” な部屋で····今回。ザンコクな事件が起こったようだ。

Van Zieks:
The address may have enjoyed fame once, My Lord, but will henceforth endure infamy for this grim crime.

グレグソン:
は····はッ! そのとおりであります!

Gregson:
Y-Yes, sir! Well put.

グレグソン:
被害者は、マダム・ロージー。部屋のソファで、息絶えたのです。

Gregson:
The victim, a certain Madam Rosie, was found asphyxiated on the accused's sofa.

サイバンチョ:
な。なんと····

Judge:
My word...

ナルホド:

ナルホド:
でも! 被害者が、ホームズさんの部屋で殺害されたかどうかは、不明です。

Ryunosuke:
But it's unclear as to whether the victim was actually killed in the defendant's suite or not!

ナルホド:
なぜなら。ホームズさんが部屋を留守にした、短い時間に····

Ryunosuke:
After all, when Mr Sholmes left the room for only a brief moment...

ナルホド:
マダム・ロージーは、ホームズさんの部屋からスガタを消したからです!

Ryunosuke:
...Madam Rosie somehow vanished herself out of his room completely!

サイバンチョ:
スガタを “消した” ····被害者が、ですか?

Judge:
Vanished herself, Counsel? The victim?

ホームズ:
ああ。ボクの部屋からキッチンへ通じるドアは、ヒトツしかないのですが。

Sholmes:
Quite true, My Lord. There is but one adjoining door between my drawing room and the kitchen.

ホームズ:
お茶をいれて、もどってみると····部屋の中には、誰もいなくなっていた。

Sholmes:
Yet having brewed some tea in the kitchen, I returned to find the room completely empty.

サイバンチョ:
“誰も” ····ですか。

Judge:
There was nobody else present?

ホームズ:
まあ····いつもなら、部屋には同居人のアイリスという少女がいるのですが。

Sholmes:
Ordinarily, my fellow lodger, Iris, would have been at home.

ホームズ:
その日は、シティで開催された学会に招待されて、留守だったのですよ。

Sholmes:
However, on the day in question, she had been invited to a meeting of a scientific society in the city.

サイバンチョ:
しかし。“スガタを消した” とは、また、大ゲサな言い方ですな。

Judge:
I'm afraid you have a propensity for exaggeration, sir. You claim the victim 'vanished herself', but really...

サイバンチョ:
当然····被害者、マダムは部屋のドアから出ていったのでは····?

Judge:
...it seems to me entirely plausible that she chose to leave via the main entrance to your suite.

グレグソン:
ところが。被告人の部屋のカギは内側から、かかっていたそうです。

Gregson:
As it happens, My Lord, the door to the accused's room was locked at the time, from the inside.

ホームズ:
そのとおり。ドアから出て行った “可能性” は、ないと断言できるね。

Sholmes:
Very true, Inspector. As such, I can say with considerable surety that the victim did not leave via my front door.

ナルホド:
そ。それならば····そうです! マダムは、窓からコッソリと····

Ryunosuke:
But, but what about...um... Ah-ha! Yes! She could have snuck out through a window!

たしかに、窓のカギは開けられており、スキ間もあいていたようだが····

Van Zieks:
The windows in the room were not locked, it's true. And the victim had the opportunity. However...

グレグソン:
ハイ。現場付近に降りつもった雪に、乱れた跡はマッタク、ありませんでした。

Gregson:
However, there was snow all round the buildin' outside, and not a patch of it had been disturbed.

バンジークス:
いっさい足跡を残さず、被害者はどうやって、現場から立ち去ったのか?

Van Zieks:
Would my learned friend care to explain how the victim could have left without leaving a trail?

サイバンチョ:
マダム・ロージーは、殺害される前、コツゼンと、そのスガタを消した····

Judge:
So the victim, Madam Rosie, somehow vanished from the scene before she was killed.

ナルホド:
ぐ······

Ryunosuke:
Argh!

ホームズ:
とにかく。突然、いなくなったからね。ボクも、シンパイになって····

Sholmes:
Naturally, I was alarmed by the sudden disappearance of my guest.

ホームズ:
屋根裏に住むキミを呼んで、一緒に《警視庁ヤード》へ馬車を走らせたワケだ。

Sholmes:
So I summoned this gentleman, who resides in the attic room above my own, and we took a cab to Scotland Yard.

ナルホド:
····はい。ホームズさんに呼ばれて、ぼくも部屋を見たのですが····

Ryunosuke:
I can confirm that the defendant called for me, and I saw his suite on my way downstairs.

ナルホド:
たしかに、ホームズさんの部屋には、誰もいませんでした。

Ryunosuke:
And yes...I'm quite sure it was empty, just as Mr Sholmes has said.

ホームズ:
そして。警視庁ヤードに行ってみると、たまたまこの刑事クンがいたのですよ。

Sholmes:
When we reached the Yard, this very detective happened to be there.

グレグソン:
····ちょうど出張からの帰りで、オフィスに寄ったトコロでした。

Gregson:
Ah, well, yes, you see...I was just in my office for a while havin' got back from some, er, important business.

ナルホド:
そこで事情を話して、刑事さんと一緒にベーカー街に大急ぎで戻りました。

Ryunosuke:
And then, having explained the situation to the inspector, we travelled back to Baker Street together.

ナルホド:
そのとき····屋敷のまわりには、ぼくたち以外の足跡はありませんでした。

Ryunosuke:
At that time, there were no footprints in the snow around the building other than the ones we'd made.

サイバンチョ:
では····弁護人。貴公も、そのとき事件の現場を目撃したのですかな?

Judge:
Do I take it then, Counsel, that you personally witnessed the scene where the incident took place?

ナルホド:
いえ····ぼくは、そのまま屋根裏に戻って、寝てしまいました。

Ryunosuke:
No, My Lord. I went straight up to bed in my own room in the attic.

バンジークス:
刑事は、ホームズ氏の部屋で、恐るべき光景を目撃した。

Van Zieks:
Inspector Gregson, however, was met with a most blood-curdling sight:

バンジークス:
部屋のソファに····消えたはずのマダム・ロージーが倒れていた····

Van Zieks:
On Mr Sholmes's sofa...the vanished Madam Rosie. Motionless.

サイバンチョ:
むううう····それで。被害者はすでに、亡くなっていたのですな?

Judge:
Hmmm. So the victim was already dead when you discovered her, Inspector?

グレグソン:
いえ。死んではいませんでしたが····もう、ムシの息でした。

Gregson:
No, My Lord. Not dead. But not far off it.

グレグソン:
最後のチカラを振り絞って、ヒトコト。こう言い残したのです。

Gregson:
She mustered all her remainin' strength to say these dyin' words:

『おのれ····シャーロック・ホームズにやられた』

'That rotter... Sholmes...will be...the death of me.'

ホームズ:
ああ。それなら、ボクも聞いたよ。うらみがましい声だったな、アレは。

Sholmes:
Ah yes, I overheard that remark at the time, too. Delivered in a rasping voice, full of malice.

ナルホド:
そ。そんな····!

Ryunosuke:
No...!

バンジークス:
そして····被害者は、ソファの上で静かに息を引き取ったという。

Van Zieks:
Those words indeed proved to be her last. The victim expired moments later, there on the sofa.

バンジークス:
死因は、クビを絞められたことによるノドの気道の損傷····である。

Van Zieks:
The cause of death was identified as damage to the respiratory tract as a result of strangulation.

バンジークス:
····被告人。グレグソン刑事の証言に、どこか相違そういはあるだろうか?

Van Zieks:
...Pray, does the accused dare to contest the inspector's account?

ホームズ:
····いや。カレにしては、なかなかよくまとまった報告だと思うよ。

Sholmes:
...Certainly not. In fact, the inspector has done an unusually fine job of summarising the salient points.

サイバンチョ:
『シャーロック・ホームズにやられた』····それは、決定的ですな····

Judge:
'Sholmes will be the death of me.' ...Damning departing words indeed.

バンジークス:
死のまぎわ、被害者は、犯人の名を “告発” したのだ。

Van Zieks:
In her final moments, the victim named her killer.

バンジークス:
····そう! シャーロック・ホームズ。彼こそが、殺害犯人である!

Van Zieks:
You! Mr Herlock Sholmes!

Ryunosuke:
But the defendant had no reason to take the victim's life!

ナルホド:
そもそも。ホームズさん、誰なんですか。被害者····マダム・ロージーというのは。

Ryunosuke:
Perhaps you could tell the court, Mr Sholmes, who exactly this Madam Rosie was?

ホームズ:
ああ。彼女のコトかい。····キミには、話していなかったかな。

Sholmes:
Ah yes, of course. ...Did I never mention her to you?

ホームズ:
あの晩、お客として招待したのだよ。なかなかクチうるさいレディでね。

Sholmes:
I'd extended an invitation to her that evening. Though she is loquacious in the extreme.

ホームズ:
ササイなことで口論になってしまって。お茶をいれるために、部屋を出たのだ。

Sholmes:
The most trivial of matters quickly becomes a quarrel. I was only too pleased to leave her presence to make tea.

ナルホド:

Ryunosuke:
Great...

バンジークス:
つまり! 被告人には、被害者を殺害する “理由” があったことになる。

Van Zieks:
It would appear then, that the accused did in fact have a motive for silencing his eristic guest...permanently.

ナルホド:

で。でも! “理由” 以前に、この事件····あまりに『ナゾだらけ』です!

Ryunosuke:
Putting that tenuous motive aside, what about the other mysteries surrounding the case?

サイバンチョ:
ふむう····たしかに。なんとも “不可解” です。

Judge:
Hmmm... I'm inclined to agree with the defence. There remain a number of inscrutable details.

サイバンチョ:
被害者が足跡も残さず部屋から消えたり、現れたり····

Judge:
The victim's alleged disappearance and subsequent reappearance leaving no trail of footprints, for example.

ナルホド:
そ。そうです! そんな “犯行” ····そもそも《不可能》じゃないですか!

Ryunosuke:
That's right! The crime described by the prosecution... could never have happened!

バンジークス:
だが。被害者は、真犯人の名前を “告発” して、息を引き取っている!

Van Zieks:
Yet the victim named the accused in her dying breath.

バンジークス:
どうやら····貴公は、ひとつ。“見落とし” をしているようだ。

Van Zieks:
It seems to me, that my learned friend has overlooked a significant detail here.

ナルホド:
み。“みおとし” ····ですって!

Ryunosuke:
Nonsense! ...What have I overlooked?

バンジークス:
そこのオトコ····自称《大探偵》は、常々、こう言い放って、はばからない。

Van Zieks:
The man in the dock - the so-called 'great detective' - all too frequently makes the following bold claim:

不可能な犯行など、存在しない。自分に解けない《謎》など、ない····と。

Van Zieks:
'There is no crime beyond the realms of possibility. No mystery beyond my powers of reasoning.'

ナルホド:

Ryunosuke:
Agh!

バンジークス:
いかがかな? ミスター・ホームズ。貴公なら。この犯行は可能であるはずだ。

Van Zieks:
So, Mr Sholmes...you will have no difficulty in explaining how the crime thus described could have taken place.

バンジークス:
そうでなければ。《大探偵》を名乗る資格など、ないと思われるが····?

Van Zieks:
Therefore I propose a toast. To the great detective upholding his name!

ホームズ:
··················ああ。モチロン。

Sholmes:
......... But of course.

ホームズ:
世紀の大探偵たる、ボクならば。····やろうと思えば “可能” だろうね。

Sholmes:
Were I to put my mind to the matter...the crime would immediately appear to all present to be entirely feasible.

ナルホド:
ほ。ホームズさん! ナニを言い出すのですかッ!

Ryunosuke:
Please, Mr Sholmes...whose side are you on?

ナルホド:
ここは、ヒトツ····お願いします!『ボクにも不可能だろうねえ』とか!

Ryunosuke:
All you need to say is: 'No, even I can't think of a way that a crime like that could have been committed!'

バンジークス:
····お聞きになったとおり。被告人は、ハッキリ認めたのである。

Van Zieks:
Let the accused's admission be noted by the court.

バンジークス:
どんなに《不可能》そうに見えようと。この世界で、彼ヒトリだけは。

Van Zieks:
Though the crime may appear impossible to us mortals of inferior mental capacity, this man alone...

その犯行が《可能》だった、と!

Van Zieks:

《大探偵》である被告人は、なんらかの手段で、被害者を殺害した。

The accused 'great detective' did, in some inscrutable manner, wilfully murder the victim, Madam Rosie.

サイバンチョ:
····被告人に、最終的な判決を言い渡します!

I therefore find the defendant...

どうやら····

Sholmes:
'Pon my word, Mr Naruhodo, you are coming along wonderfully.

ホームズ:
ごく “アタリマエ” の事実に気がついたようだね····ミスター・ナルホドー。

Sholmes:
You've deduced a fundamental truth about this case, I believe.

バンジークス:
どういうことだ? ····探偵よ。

Van Zieks:
Which would be...detective?

ホームズ:
この事件の《ヒミツ》を知る者····それは、当然。

Sholmes:
That the truth to this case is known...

ホームズ:
“真犯人” だよ。····そうだろう? 刑事クン。

Sholmes:
...only to the true culprit, obviously. ...Is that not so, Gregson?

え! ま。まあ····それは、そうだが····

Gregson:
Eh? What? Well, um... I s'pose...yes...

ナルホド:
まさか! あの晩。いったい、なにがあったのか····

Ryunosuke:
You don't mean...! Are you suggesting, Mr Sholmes...

Ryunosuke:
...that you have an idea as to what actually happened that night?

ホームズ:
“わかっている” も、なにも····

Sholmes:
An idea? My dear fellow...

ホームズ:
そもそも。今回の事件に《謎》など、なにひとつ、ないからね!

Sholmes:
...I could explain the entire incident from start to finish with not a single detail omitted!

····どうやら。そこの探偵は、事件を正しくリカイしていないようだ。

Van Zieks:
It seems the detective has failed to grasp the situation.

ホームズ:
それは、果たして “どちら” かな? ····中央刑事裁判所オールドベイリーの《死神》クン。

Sholmes:
Pray, Mr Reaper...which of us has truly failed to grasp the situation, I wonder?

バンジークス:
····それならば。答えてみるがいいだろう。

Van Zieks:
Then answer me this:

被害者は、事件の直前。貴公の部屋からコツ然と姿を消したと聞いている。

Van Zieks:
You claim that prior to the incident the victim suddenly vanished without a trace from your room. If so...

バンジークス:
····いったい。被害者はどこから、どうやって消えたのだッ!

Van Zieks:
...how exactly did Madam Rosie disappear?

ホームズ:
そんなの。《窓》に決まっているだろ? ····すこし、開いていたのだから。

Sholmes:
Why, naturally, via the window. It was ajar after all.

ナルホド:
で····でも! 部屋は2階だし、窓のソトの雪の上に、足跡はなかった!

Ryunosuke:
But that can't be! The room is a whole storey above street level, and anyway no prints were found in the snow!

ホームズ:
足跡を残さない方法ならば。いくらだって考えられるだろう。

Sholmes:
There are any number of ways one could avoid leaving tracks in the snow, surely?

ナルホド:
た。たとえば、どんな方法が····!

Ryunosuke:
S-Such as...?

ホームズ:
たとえば····そうだな。“空を飛ぶ” とかね。

Sholmes:
Such as...flying, for instance.

バンジークス:
····バカげている。

Van Zieks:
A fatuous notion!

バンジークス:
それでは····いったい。被害者は、どこに飛んでいったというのかッ!

Van Zieks:
And to where do you propose the victim flew, Mr Sholmes?

ホームズ:
考えるまでもないさ。モチロン、犯人のトコロだよ。

Sholmes:
Is it not entirely plain? To the culprit's abode, of course.

ホームズ:
マダム・ロージーは、ボクの部屋を抜けだして····そこで、殺害されたのだ!

Sholmes:
For, having left my suite, that is clearly where Madam Rosie was murdered.

ホームズ:
····キノドクだとは思わないかい? わざわざ、イノチを落としに行くとはね。

Sholmes:
...Take a moment to consider the cruel irony, if you will. By her own volition, she flew directly to her death.

Do you forget, detective? The victim's corpse was discovered on your own sofa.

Sholmes:
No doubt because her killer carried her back there.

ナルホド:
で····でも。いったい、どうやって! 雪の上には、やはり足跡はなかった····

Ryunosuke:
But, but what about the lack of footprints in the snow again, then? There just weren't any.

ナルホド:
ぼくたちの他に、あの部屋に入った者は、いなかったんです!

Ryunosuke:
Other than our own, from when we returned home ourselves!

ホームズ:
····それは、違う。ヒトリだけ····いるじゃないか。

Sholmes:
If by 'our' footprints, you refer to your own and mine, you are quite right. But there were those of another.

ホームズ:
事件の夜。ボクの部屋に、遺体を運びこむことができた人物が。

Sholmes:
On the night in question, there was one other person who could have conveyed the victim to my sofa.

A man whose somewhat unavailing presence at the scene of the crime would be questioned by no one.

そう。警視庁ヤードで事件の知らせを聞いて、まっ先に現場に駆けつけた人物。

Sholmes:
Indeed I do. A man who hastened to the scene directly upon learning of the incident at Scotland Yard. Namely...

····グレグソン刑事クンだ。

Sholmes:
...you, Inspector Gregson.

グレグソン:

Gregson:
Eeeeeeeeeh?!

キミは、クビを絞めて半死半生となったマダム・ロージーとともに現場を訪れた。

Sholmes:
When you arrived at my address on Baker Street, you were carrying the half-dead Madam Rosie with you.

そして、スキを見て、ボクのソファにそっと被害者の身体を横たえたのだ。

You waited for a suitable opportunity, and then laid the victim on my sofa.

My dear fellow, a most obvious answer presents itself, does it not?

The inspector is rarely, if ever, without his overcoat. The victim was simply conveyed in one of its many pockets.

マッタク、よくしゃべるヤツでね。さすがに、ボクもハラが立ってしまって。

Sholmes:
She was an incessant talker, I must say. Her manner was quite intolerable at times.

ホームズ:
つい、口論になってしまったワケだ。····シメ殺してやろうかと思ったよ。

Sholmes:
Wont to turn every conversation to a quarrel. I thought to strangle the creature on more than one occasion.

You had a quarrel...with a parakeet?
