Lord van Zieks definitely didn't do it.

I mean what was he doing there on Fresno Street that day in the first place?

Well according to the man's testimony...

グレグソンさまを “調べていた” とのことでございましたが····

Susato:
...he said he was investigating Inspector Gregson, didn't he?

あの部屋は、グレグソン刑事の “ヒミツの仕事部屋オフィス” だった····

Ryunosuke:
And it turns out that little room was actually the inspector's secret office...

アイリス:
おお。なんだか “ワルだくみ” のニオイがするねー。

Iris:
Ooh, that sounds like it has all the makings of a wonderfully devilish plot!

でも。現場の “ついたて” に、ビッシリ貼られていた事件資料は····

Ryunosuke:
But then why was that noticeboard in there covered in all those particular papers?

ナルホド:
すべて《死神》に関するものだった。····なんだか、イヤな予感がするよ。

Ryunosuke:
Papers about cases with a link to the Reaper. ...I'm starting to get a bad feeling about all this.

アイリス:

Iris:
Oh dear... That sounds more like something horribly devilish...

とにかく。グレグソン刑事さまの “足取り” を調べる必要がございます!

Susato:
We must start by looking into Inspector Gregson's movements of late!

ナルホド:
まさか····刑事さんの足取りを調べることになるとは思わなかったな。

Ryunosuke:
I never imagined I might have to be investigating an inspector's movements.

その《手帳》によれば。事件の前日、グレグソンさまは····

Well, according to the entry in his diary...

《赤毛連盟》の “潜入捜査” をしているハズでございました。

Susato:
...he was carrying out an incognito investigation of the Red-Headed League the day before his death.

Well...Mr Sholmes was trying to apply, whereas the inspector was supposed to be investigating.

...wasn't actually Gregson at all. It was Mr Vigil, in possession of Gregson's identification.

スサト:

Ryunosuke:
But...why would Gregson need an alibi?

スサト:
どうやら。グレグソンさまには····

Susato:
It would appear that the inspector...

スサト:
なにか “ヒミツ” にしたいことがあったようでございますね。

Susato:
...had something to do that he wished to keep secret.

アイリス:
ううう····ただの “アゲモノ好き” だと思ってたのになあ。

I don't believe it... I, I always thought he was just a harmless lover of fish and chips...

But perhaps they were seasoned with something a little more potent than salt and vinegar...

That's right. To ask Mr Sholmes if he would help her to find her missing husband.

Ryunosuke:
Only Mr Sholmes completely passed the buck to us.

Ryunosuke:

It's, it's just occurred to me that I might have forgotten something when we left this morning.

いずれにせよ。コイツにはあまり、よい思い出がありませんね。

Anyway, the sight of these things doesn't bring back good memories for me.

まあ。なにかケガをされて、使ったことがあるのですか?

Susato:

ナルホド:
幼いころ、おもしろ半分で勝手に借りて遊んでいたら····

Ryunosuke:
When I was little. I thought they looked fun, so I borrowed a pair to play with.

But then I slipped and sprained my ankle.

...There are limits even to what I can do when I'm half asleep, you know, Miss Susato.

どうやら····グレグソン刑事は、特別な任務を命じられていたようです。

Vigil:
Inspector Gregson was obviously engaged in a special operation of some sort.

ミテルモン:
《倫敦警視庁スコットランドヤード》にもヒミツにして、何かを調べる必要があったのです。

Vigil:
He was investigating something that even Scotland Yard couldn't know about.

ナルホド:
(それが····《死神》の “エモノ” に関する調査だったのか····)

Ryunosuke:
(Details of the Reaper's marks, yes...)

ミテルモン:
そんなとき。私は、彼の《身分証》を渡されて “身代わり” を演じていました。

Vigil:
It was when he had to carry out those investigations that I would take his identification and impersonate him.

ナルホド:
グレグソン刑事のフリをして、捜査をしていたワケですね。

Ryunosuke:
You'd pretend to be the inspector and carry out investigations on his behalf?

ミテルモン:
いえいえ! 私はただの “物売り” 。捜査なんて、トンでもない。

Vigil:
Oh no! Never! A common street pedlar couldn't possibly carry out a proper police investigation!

ミテルモン:
ただ、指定された場所に行って、ちょっと目立ったコトをするだけです。

Vigil:
All I would do is go to the specified location and make a little hoo-ha.

ミテルモン:
“グレグソンと名乗る刑事が来た” と、その場の者たちに印象づけるために。

Vigil:
Just something to leave an impression. So everyone there would think, 'A detective called Gregson was here.'

スサト:
それでは····あの事件の、“前日” も····?

Susato:
So...that's what you were doing on the day prior to the incident?

ミテルモン:
ええ。ライム街の《赤毛連盟》でひと騒ぎ起こすように、と。

Vigil:
Yes. He asked me to make an appearance at the park on Lime Street for the Red-Headed League event.

ミテルモン:
そこで、いつものように《身分証》を振りまわして騒いでみたところ····

Vigil:
So as usual, I flashed the inspector's identification around and was very vocal about my presence.

アイリス:
“カンキン” されちゃったんだ。····ハンニンに。

Iris:
But then you were taken prisoner! By those red-headed fraudsters.

ミテルモン:
ええ、そういうコトです。

Vigil:
Yes.

ナルホド:
いつも、《身分証》を振りまわしてそんなふうに騒ぐワケですか?

Ryunosuke:
So...you would always make a point of showing Gregson's identification and generally being loud?

ミテルモン:
ええ。それが私の “役目” ですから。

Vigil:
That's what the inspector asked me to do, yes.

アイリス:
そりや、“伝説の刑事” にもなるねー。····よくない意味で。

Iris:
Well that's one way of becoming a legendary detective, I suppose. ...Not a good one, though.

ミテルモン:
まあ、このとおり。クビのまわりにアザはできましたが····

Vigil:
And as you know, I suffered this bruising around my neck at their hands.

ミテルモン:
····翌日の朝。約束どおり、解放されました。

Vigil:
But the following day they kept their word and released me.

ナルホド:
····《身分証》は返してもらえなかったみたいですけどね。

Ryunosuke:
Without returning the inspector's identification to you, however.

ミテルモン:
その日の午後5時。“報告” のため、あの部屋で会う約束だったのですが····

Vigil:
We had arranged to meet in the Fresno Street room at five that day so I could report back to the inspector.

ミテルモン:
フレスノ街に戻った時····あの “銃声” を聞いたのです。

Vigil:
But at the agreed time, that's when I heard the gunshot.

ミテルモン:
10年前の6月17日····深夜零時。それが、処刑の時刻でした。

Vigil:
It was at midnight on 17th June ten years ago. That was the time scheduled for the execution.

ナルホド:
しかし····《プロフェッサー》の処刑は、行われなかったのですね。

Ryunosuke:
But the Professor's execution never actually took place, did it?

スサト:
それどころか。処刑 “そのもの” を利用した、《脱獄計画》が実行された····

Susato:
Or rather, the execution itself must have been used to effect the plan of escape.

スサト:
なんと恐ろしい計画でしょう····

Susato:
I hardly dare to imagine what a chilling plan it was...

ミテルモン:
バークリーは、英国で最も警備の厳重な刑務所として知られていました。

Vigil:
Barclay was renowned for being the highest security prison in the country.

ミテルモン:
刑務所に出入りするものは、すべて。何重もの《検査》を受ける規則ルールでした。

Vigil:
Everything that went in or out of the place was searched multiple times.

ミテルモン:
しかし。ただひとつ “例外” があった····いや。

Vigil:
But...there was one notable exception.

ミテルモン:
むしろ···· “盲点” と言ったほうがいいかもしれません。

Vigil:
Or rather, one notable loophole. Something that was never questioned.

ナルホド:
····今なら、わかる気がします。その “例外” こそが····

Ryunosuke:
I have a feeling I know what that loophole was now.

ナルホド:
“処刑” された死刑囚の亡きがらをおさめた《棺桶》だったのですね。

Ryunosuke:
The coffins into which the bodies of the executed convicts were placed, correct?

ミテルモン:
····そのとおりです。

Vigil:
...Yes.

ミテルモン:
処刑によって命を絶たれた囚人は、監察医の手で “死亡” が確認されると····

Vigil:
Once the coroner had confirmed the death of a condemned convict...

ミテルモン:
その後すぐ、刑務所のウラにあるロウゲートの墓地に “埋葬” されます。

Vigil:
...the body was taken in its coffin for immediate burial in Lowgate Cemetery just behind the prison.

ミテルモン:
····そのとき。遺体の入った《棺桶》は····

Vigil:
The chief warder first had to sign the necessary papers.

ミテルモン:
看守長が《確認書》に署名サインをすれば、あとは誰も手を触れない規則ルールなのです。

Vigil:
And after that no member of staff was permitted to touch the coffin containing the body again.

アイリス:

Iris:
...!

ミテルモン:
処刑の瞬間。執行人と監察医以外は、《処刑室》への立入りは禁じられます。

Vigil:
When executions took place, only the executioner and the coroner were permitted inside the chamber.

ミテルモン:
私はトナリの部屋で待機して、囚人の “死亡確認” の報告を待ちました。

Vigil:
I would wait in the adjacent room for word that the condemned convict was dead.

ミテルモン:
遺体安置室に行くと····いつものとおり。棺桶がヒトツ、置いてありました。

Vigil:
On that occasion, once I had that confirmation, I went into the mortuary to find a lone coffin, as usual.

ミテルモン:
いつもなら。棺ひつぎの中を確認、署名サインしたあと、クギを打ちつけるのですが····

Vigil:
The procedure was that I would sign the paperwork having checked the coffin, then nail it shut.

ミテルモン:
あのときは····なぜか。棺ひつぎのフタにはすでに、クギが打たれていたのです。

Vigil:
But for some reason that day, the coffin was already nailed shut.

スサト:
なんですって····

Susato:
No!

ミテルモン:
そのときの私は、深く考えず····

Vigil:
I didn't think anything of it at the time.

ミテルモン:
副看守長あたりがすでに確認して、クギを打ったのだろう····と思いました。

Vigil:
I assumed that my deputy must have checked the coffin and nailed it shut before I arrived.

ナルホド:
で。では! その、棺ひつぎの中に······

Ryunosuke:
So...you mean...?! The coffin contained...

ミテルモン:
処刑を逃れたアソーギ・グンシンが息を潜めていたと考えられます。

Vigil:
Yes. I can only imagine that Asogi, having escaped his execution somehow, was alive inside the coffin.

ミテルモン:
《棺桶》は、そのまま正門を通り····ロウゲート墓地に運び出された。

Vigil:
The coffin was then taken out through the main gates and deposited in Lowgate Cemetery.

スサト:
棺桶の中の空気は、おそらく数時間しか、もたなかったと思われます。

Susato:
Presumably there wouldn't have been enough air inside to breathe for long.

ナルホド:
埋葬された、その晩のうちに、何者かが、それを掘り起こした····

Ryunosuke:
So in the early hours following the burial, somebody dug up the coffin again to set Genshin free.

Susato:
But in the end...

Susato:
...he was fatally shot in the graveyard anyway.

スサト:
いったい····ロウゲート墓地で、何があったのでしょうか····

What on earth really happened in Lowgate Cemetery that night, I wonder?

ミテルモン:
····わかりません。私に言えることは、ふたつです。

Vigil:
I'm afraid I really don't know. All I can say with certainty are two things:

ミテルモン:
アソーギの脱獄は、刑務所内の誰かが手を貸さなければ不可能だった。

Vigil:
Asogi couldn't possibly have escaped that way without help from somebody working in the prison.

ミテルモン:

Ryunosuke:
Obviously, you knew the man then?

Yes. I remember him well, in fact.

After that trial, which was carried out behind closed doors, attended only by elite members of the judiciary...
