お客さんの荷物が放置されている。ドロボーが現れないか、シンパイです。

Ryunosuke:
Look at those cases just left there on that trolley. Aren't they worried about thieves? I know I am.

スサト:
ほら。あえて遠くからボーイさまが目を光らせておりますから、安心です。

Susato:
Haven't you seen the porter over there? Don't worry, he's obviously keeping an eye on everything.

ナルホド:
うううん····たしかに。これは “誘いのスキ” というヤツでしょうか。

Ryunosuke:
Ah, so it's a trap, designed to catch any chancers who might be tempted!

ボーイ:
··········

Porter:
.........

ナルホド:
····なんだか、ボーイさまにニラまれたような気がします。

Ryunosuke:
Why did the porter give me such a scathing look just now, do you suppose?

スサト:
成歩堂さま、なにぶん “黒ずくめ” でございますから····

Susato:
Well...some might say you look a little suspicious with your jet-black clothes.

ナルホド:
『ございますから』····なんですか。

Ryunosuke:
Not everyone clad in black is some sort of ninja with intent to steal, you know!

ナルホド:
あの、世界の宝石をひとまとめにした、キラキラ光る『お宝』は、なんですか。

Ryunosuke:
Have you seen all those sparkling jewels up there? They must have gathered every gem in the world for that!

スサト:
ええと····あれは『しゃんでりあ』でございますね。

Susato:
Ah...it's called a chandelier, I believe.

スサト:
広いお部屋を豪華に明るくする、いわば『照明』でございます。

Susato:
It's designed to provide elegant lighting in large, spacious rooms like this.

ナルホド:

ナルホド:
たかだか、部屋を明るくするのに世界中の宝石をまとめますか。

Ryunosuke:
So they had to gather every gem in the world just to illuminate one room?

スサト:
····あれは、“電灯” で硝子がらすを照らしているのだと存じます。

Susato:
...It's probably electric light bulbs that are actually throwing the light.

If I tried to hang something like that from the ceiling in the office, it would be scraping on the floor.

Susato:
I think perhaps chandeliers aren't for you, Mr Naruhodo.

スサト:
あそこは、『ふろんと』でございますね。

Susato:
That desk is known as the hotel reception.

スサト:
宿泊されるお客さまが、その “手続き” をされるところです。

Anyone wanting to spend the night has to report there to sign in for their stay.

Ryunosuke:
Oh, so do you think that's the head clerk behind the desk there?

スサト:
····きっと、そうなのでしょうね。ごリッパでございます。

Susato:
Yes, I'm sure it must be.

ナルホド:
しばらく泊まってみたいですね。こんな豪華な《大旅館ホテル》に。

Ryunosuke:
I'd love to stay in a grand hotel like this for a little while, wouldn't you? Just to know what it's like.

スサト:
····わたしどもの留学費で、大日本帝国がかたむくと存じます。

Susato:
...If the hotel fee was paid through our stipend, I'm afraid it might bankrupt our homeland.

ナルホド:

Ryunosuke:
(True. London gives the word 'expensive' a whole new meaning.)

こんなところにも、倫敦ロンドン万博ばんぱくの《水晶塔》クリスタルタワーの絵があります。

Ryunosuke:
Look at that. It's a picture of the Crystal Tower.

スサト:
なにしろ倫敦ロンドン万博ばんぱくは、大英帝国の威信をかけた、一大事業ですから。

Susato:
Well, the Great Exhibition is one of Britain's most prestigious achievements in recent years.

スサト:
いったい、どれぐらいの高さなのか····まさに、科学の “極きわみ” でございますね。

Susato:
I wonder how tall it is? It really does represent the pinnacle of scientific achievement in so many ways...

ナルホド:
あ。ぼくの下宿の近所の銭湯には、20メートルの煙突がありますよ。

Ryunosuke:
There's a twenty-metre-tall chimney on the bathhouse near my lodgings at Yumei University.

ナルホド:
あの界隈ではイチバン高いって、番台のオヤジが自慢しています。

Ryunosuke:
The attendant there is always boasting that it's the tallest object in the neighbourhood.

スサト:
ちなみに。おトナリの巴里パリには、300メートルの塔があるとか。

Susato:
I'm sure. Did you know that over the Channel in Paris, there's a tower that's three hundred metres tall?

ナルホド:
えええッ! それは、《亀の湯》の煙突、何本ぶんですかッ!

Ryunosuke:
WHAT?! How, how many times taller than the chimney at Yumei Sokin hot-springs is that?

ナルホド:
それに! そんなに高かったら····ケムリが詰まっちまいませんか!

Ryunosuke:
And if it's that tall, how does it draw properly? The smoke would get stuck, surely?

スサト:
····とりあえず、《亀の湯》は忘れたほうがよいかと存じます。

Susato:
...I don't think it's that sort of tower, Mr Naruhodo.

ナルホド:
それで····いかがでしたか? 倫敦ロンドンまでの旅は。

Ryunosuke:
So, how was the voyage here?

ミコトバ:
やはり、50日ものあいだ海の上というのは、長く感じるものです。

Mikotoba:
Well, fifty days at sea is a long time by anyone's standards.

ジゴク:
しかし。16年前、我々が初めて来たときは、こんなものではなかった。

Jigoku:
But it wasn't as bad as when we first came sixteen years ago.

ミコトバ:
ああ····あのまま一生、大海原おおうなばらを漂うのではないかと思いましたね。

Mikotoba:
No, that's true. Then I truly wondered if we wouldn't be drifting in the vast ocean for the rest of our lives.

ミコトバ:
今回は、キミたちと同じ航路をたどって来たので、安心して船旅を楽しめたよ。

Mikotoba:
This time we followed the same route as you, so we were able to relax and enjoy the experience.

スサト:
····それでは。仏蘭西フランスの “華の都” 巴里パリにも立ち寄られたのですね。

Susato:
...Ah, so you stopped in France's beautiful capital, Paris?

ミコトバ:
ええ。とは言っても、たった一夜のことでしたがね。

We did, yes. Though only for one night.

ゆうべ、ダンケルク港を出航して、ドーバー海峡を渡ってきたのです。

Mikotoba:
And yesterday evening we left the Port of Dunkirk for Dover.

ジゴク:
明日から、《国際科学捜査大討論会シンポジウム》が始まる。なんとか間にあったな。

Jigoku:
Just in time for the symposium, in fact. It starts tomorrow!

スサト:
父上が、そのような大会議に招待されるなんて····

Susato:
It's wonderful that you were invited to attend such an important international event.

スサト:
寿沙都は、誇らしゅうございます。

Susato:
I'm very proud of you, Father.

ミコトバ:
この男····慈獄は、16年前の留学で英国の司法長官の信頼を得ました。

Mikotoba:
It's thanks to Seishiro here. Sixteen years ago he managed to ingratiate himself with Britain's Attorney General.

ミコトバ:
それゆえ、招待を受けたのでしょう。私は、そのオマケのようなものです。

I'm sure that's why he was invited. And I suppose you could say I'm something of an appendage by default.

ジゴク:

Jigoku:
Speak for yourself, Yujin. You were close friends with the professor of forensic science at a major hospital.

ミコトバ:
正直····あまり “よい思い出” とは言えませんがね。

Mikotoba:
Yes, well...I'd rather not dredge all that up, really.

ジゴク:
····そうだな。いくら年月としつきが流れても、アイツはもう、ここにはいない。

Jigoku:
No... There's been a lot of water under the bridge since then, but it doesn't bring him back.

Ryunosuke:
(Kazuma's father, I suppose...)

Jigoku:
Genshin came to Britain as a police detective. He was studying investigative techniques at Scotland Yard.

ジゴク:
なぜ、あのような悲劇を生んだのか····最後までわからなかった。

Jigoku:
I've never understood what drove the man to commit such heinous acts.

ミコトバ:
極秘ごくひ裁判のすえ····真相は闇に葬られ、彼は誰にも知られず、処刑されました。

Mikotoba:
It was a closed trial, so the public never knew the truth. And he was executed with little ado.

ミコトバ:
我が国でも、真相を知る者はほんの数名です。

Mikotoba:
To this day, very few people know what really happened, even in our homeland.

ナルホド:
アイツは····亜双義一真は知っていたのですか?

Ryunosuke:
But what about Kazuma? Did he know?

ナルホド:
その······父親の “真実” について。

Ryunosuke:
Did he know the truth about his father?

ジゴク:
····知るわけがない。彼には “病死” と伝えられた。

Jigoku:
No no, of course not. He was told his father passed from sickness.

ミコトバ:
しかし····

Mikotoba:

もしかしたら。父の死に “疑問” を感じていたのかもしれませんね。

Mikotoba:
...I suspect he may have had his doubts.

ナルホド:
え······

Ryunosuke:
Oh! Why?

ミコトバ:
身寄りのない一真くんの成長を我が子のように見てきました。

Mikotoba:
As you know, I tried to guide Kazuma growing up, as if he were my own son.

ミコトバ:
そんな彼が、勇盟大学の教授室に現れて····ある日、こう言ったのです。

Mikotoba:
Then one day, he came to my office at the university and said:

····じつは。どうしても、大英帝国へ留学したいのです····!

Kazuma:
I've decided...I want to travel to Great Britain and study there!

スサト:
もしかしたら、一真さまは····

Susato:
Do, do you think...

スサト:
お父上の “死” を調べるために、大英帝国へ····!

Susato:
...he wanted to come here to investigate his father's death?!

ミコトバ:
····わかりません。しかし····

Mikotoba:
I don't know.

ミコトバ:
彼の目を見て····私は、彼を止めるべきではないと思ったのです。

Mikotoba:
But when I looked into his eyes, I did know that there was no way I'd be able to stop him.

スサト:

Susato:

ナルホド:
1年前。大英帝国へ向かう蒸気船で、アイツは····命を落としました。

Ryunosuke:
As you know, we both thought Kazuma had died on the steamship during our voyage to Great Britain in January.

スサト:
しかし。一真さまは、生きていた。お父さまは、ご存じだったのですね。

Susato:
But he didn't die. He's alive. ...As you knew, didn't you, Father?

ミコトバ:
正確には、違います。我々が知っていたのは····

Mikotoba:
In actual fact, no. What I did know...

ミコトバ:
蒸気船が香港に着いたとき、彼が “消えた” という事実だけです。

Mikotoba:
...is that when your ship docked in Hong Kong, he mysteriously vanished.

ジゴク:
香港に捜査官を派遣はけんして捜査もした。しかし····手がかりは、なかったのだ。

Jigoku:
We sent a team of investigators to Hong Kong to try to ascertain what had happened, but to no avail.

ミコトバ:
まさか、彼が “生きていた” ····しかも、この倫敦ロンドンにいようとは。

Mikotoba:
But he's still alive? And here, in London, you say?

ミコトバ:
····本当に、今のいままで思いもしませんでしたよ。

Mikotoba:
...I never dared even to dream it.

ジゴク:
だが····それならば、なぜ。彼は今まで連絡をとらなかったのだ!

Jigoku:
Why on earth did the young man not make contact?!

ジゴク:
政府も、警察も。彼の手がかりを追って、さんざん探したというのに!

Jigoku:
The government and the police have been chasing clues fruitlessly for months now!

スサト:
それが····どうやら。一真さまは記憶をなくされていたようです。

Susato:
Well...it seems that he was suffering from amnesia.

ジゴク:
な。なんだと! “キオク” を····

Jigoku:
What? Amnesia?!

ナルホド:
ぼくたちと、この倫敦ロンドンで初めて会ったとき····

Ryunosuke:
When we first came across him again here in London...

ナルホド:
アイツは、ぼくたちのことがわからなかったのです。

Ryunosuke:
...he didn't know who either of us were.

ミコトバ:
そうだったのですか····

Mikotoba:

ナルホド:
アイツが記憶を取り戻したのは····つい、8日前のことでした。

Ryunosuke:
He only regained his memory eight days ago.

Jigoku:
This is unbelievable...

ミコトバ:
むう······なんだか、妙なハナシですね。

Mikotoba:
Yes... It's quite miraculous...

ミコトバ:
ヴォルテックス卿は、なぜ我々に知らせてくれなかったのでしょう。

Mikotoba:
I wonder why Lord Stronghart didn't let us know.

ミコトバ:
とにかく。大至急、ハナシをしなければなりません。

Mikotoba:

ナルホド:

Ryunosuke:
(I wonder how Kazuma's been these past few days...)

今から、16年前····もうずいぶん、昔のハナシだ。

Jigoku:
That began sixteen years ago now. It's a distant memory, really.

御琴羽悠仁、亜双義玄真、そしてこの····慈獄政士郎。

It was Yujin here, Genshin Asogi and myself. We were the original three.

ジゴク:

Jigoku:
The first judicial scholars from Japan to travel overseas to study.

Susato:
Yes, Grandmother told me.

ジゴク:
英国式の法医学····《司法解剖術》を学ぶため、大病院で研究をしていたな。

Jigoku:
He went to do research at a great London hospital to study autopsy - practically unheard of in Japan.

ミコトバ:
刑務所の裏にある共同墓地を挟んだ、なかなか雰囲気ふんいきのある場所でしたね。

Mikotoba:
Yes, it was an eerie place, sandwiched between the back of a prison and a burial ground.

ナルホド:
ぼ。墓地、ですか····

Ryunosuke:
Ugh, not more talk of graves...

ジゴク:
なにしろ。司法解剖に回される遺体は、引き取り手のいないコトも多いのだ。

Jigoku:
Very often, there's no one willing to deal with bodies following autopsy work.

ミコトバ:
墓地、刑務所····司法医学の研究には必要な “結びつき” と言えます。

Mikotoba:
So you see, autopsy labs have something of an unavoidable relationship with graveyards and prisons.

ナルホド:
なんだか、恐ろしいです。····そう聞くと。

Ryunosuke:
Not my cup of tea at all...

ミコトバ:
あの刑務所のバリケード所長にもずいぶん、お世話になりました。

Mikotoba:
Do you remember that Scottish prison governor? Caidin, his name was. He was a good man.

ジゴク:
そして。英国を訪れて、6年目····あの《事件》が起きた。

Jigoku:
Yes. But then of course, in our sixth year here, everything changed with that dreadful case.

ジゴク:
亜双義玄真が逮捕されたのだ。····恐ろしい “殺人鬼” として。

Jigoku:
When Genshin was arrested...for a series of the most gruesome murders.

ミコトバ:
····信じられませんでした。彼とは、古いつきあいだった····

Mikotoba:
I simply couldn't believe it. I'd known the man for years.

ジゴク:
ワシは、極秘ごくひ裁判の証言台に立って、なんとかアイツを助けようとした。

Jigoku:
I was a witness at the secret hearing and I tried to speak in his defence, but...

ミコトバ:
まあ····やりすぎて、キミ自身が被告人になってしまいましたがね。

Mikotoba:
But you went a little too far and ended up facing charges yourself, didn't you?

ジゴク:
とにかく····裁判が終わって、我々は帰国することになったのだ。

Jigoku:
Well...suffice to say that after that trial we were sent back to Japan.

ミコトバ:
亜双義玄真を残して····我々には、どうすることもできなかった。

Mikotoba:
There was nothing more we could do to save Genshin. He was a lost cause, sadly.

スサト:

Susato:

ナルホド:
御琴羽教授。コチラ、見ていただけますかッ!

Ryunosuke:
Professor Mikotoba, I wonder...could, could I show you something?

ミコトバ:
····なにをそんなに緊張しているのですか?

Mikotoba:
Why do you seem so nervous?

ナルホド:
教授に見ていただくのですから。学生としては、キンチョーするワケです。

Ryunosuke:
I, I suppose because I'm a student showing something to a professor. That's always quite nerve-racking.

ミコトバ:
緊張してもらって申しわけないが。····特に、思い当たりませんね。

Mikotoba:
Well, I'm sorry I perturb you in that way, but anyway... I'm afraid I have nothing useful to say about that, really.

ナルホド:
5、6回、生まれ変わっても読みきれない量の本が詰まっている。

Ryunosuke:
You couldn't read all of these books even if you were reincarnated six times over as a bookworm!

ナルホド:
(ヴォルテックス卿····本当に、ゼンブ読んでいるのかしら)

Ryunosuke:
(Can Lord Stronghart really have read all of these?)

スサト:
そういえば····父の書斎には、読まれていない本がたくさんあります。

Susato:
Thinking about it...Father's study is full of books that look as though they've never been read, too.

そうなのですか。

なんでも。行商の本売りの者たちが、父をひっきりなしに訪ねてきて····

Susato:
Pedlars of books are forever pushing their wares on him, you see.

スサト:
ヒトのいい父は、ついつい買ってしまうことがあるそうで。

Susato:
And I think he's just too kind-hearted to refuse them.

ナルホド:
それは····なんというか、狙われていますね。行商から。

Ryunosuke:
There's a phrase for that in Britain. People would say they 'saw him coming'.

スサト:
ですから。もしかしたら、この、圧倒的な書物は····

Susato:
It makes me wonder if perhaps the vast number of books on the shelves in here...

スサト:
ヴォルテックス卿の、かぎりない “ヒトのよさ” なのかもしれません。

Susato:
...are a sign of Lord Stronghart's overwhelming kind-heartedness.

In a way, they feel like guardians of the Lord Chief Justice's office.

I suppose...they're rather like the lion-dogs that guard shrines in Japan, aren't they?

...Aren't they a bit too human to be called 'lion-dogs'?

スサト:
ちなみに。寿沙都は将来、2ひきのネコさまと暮らすのが夢でございます。

Susato:
Did you know that it's a dream of mine to keep two cats one day?

····ハナシが急角度でほのぼのしてきましたね····

Ryunosuke:
I feel as though we've gone off at a bit of a tangent, don't you?

今日も、巨大な時計の機械が、正確な “律動リズム” で時を刻んでいる。

Ryunosuke:
As ever, the enormous clock is diligently maintaining its rhythmical tick-tock today.

スサト:
機械が動くのをボンヤリ見ていると、時を忘れることがございますね。

Susato:
Watching machinery at work can be quite mesmerising, can't it? Ironically, you can completely forget the time.

スサト:
わたし、蒸気機関車の大きな車輪がまわるのを見ているのが好きで····

Susato:
What I particularly enjoy is watching the enormous wheels of a steam locomotive turning.

スサト:
幼いころ、よく祖母そぼにつれられて、汽車を見に行っておりました。

Susato:
When I was a little girl, Grandmother often used to take me to watch the railway engines, you know.

ナルホド:
ぼくも。暖炉の炎が揺れているのはいつまで見ていても、飽きませんね。

Ryunosuke:
It's an open fire for me. I could sit and watch the flames for hours.

スサト:

Susato:
Mr Naruhodo! We could install one in the office!

スサト:
巨大な機関車の車輪と、それを回転させる、巨大な蒸気機関を!

Susato:
An enormous wheel, turned by an enormous steam engine!

Ryunosuke:
...Perhaps we could start with a simple fireplace?

ナルホド:
座っただけで、エラくなった気分を味わえる判事席だ。

Ryunosuke:
Just sitting behind that desk must make you feel so important, don't you think?

スサト:
やはり。男子たるもの、こういう場所で仕事をしたいものなのでしょうか。

Susato:
Would you like to have an office like this, Mr Naruhodo? With such a grand desk?

ナルホド:
····いや。ぼくはちょっとエンリョしておきます。

Ryunosuke:
Who, me? No...I don't think so.

スサト:
おや。

Susato:
Oh?

ナルホド:
だって。急に “お便所トイレット” に行きたくなったら、この距離はイノチ取りです!

Ryunosuke:
Well, imagine if you suddenly found yourself needing the toilet. You'd have so far to go!

スサト:
················たしかに。

Susato:

スサト:
こういう部屋で仕事をなさるカタは、そういうコトは考えないと存じます。

Susato:
Perhaps the important people who work in ostentatious offices like this haven't considered such things.

ナルホド:

(...I'm going to take that as a compliment.)

どうやら、先日。ついに倫敦ロンドン万博ばんぱくの来場者は、3000万を数えたそうだ。

Stronghart:
Not long ago, visitor numbers to the Great Exhibition exceeded thirty million.

ナルホド:
さ。さんぜんまん····ですか! (そんなにヒトがいたのか····地球)

Ryunosuke:
Th-Thirty million?! (Are there even that many people in the world?)

スサト:
ちなみに、大帝都・東京市の人口は200万人ほどでございます。

Susato:
As a comparison, Mr Naruhodo, the population of the imperial capital Tokyo is two million.

ヴォルテックス:
その万博ばんぱく会場の、中央大講堂セントラルホールにて《国際科学捜査大討論会シンポジウム》が開催される。

Stronghart:
I will be opening the International Forensic Science Symposium in the exhibition's main auditorium.

ヴォルテックス:

The twentieth century will see the wholesale adoption of forensic investigation techniques.

And cooperation between policing organisations around the globe will be essential.

Perhaps you know that in our homeland, this colour of hair has traditionally been described as green-black.

ナルホド:

Ryunosuke:
...That sounds a lot like a contradiction if you ask me.

スサト:

Susato:
So some people clearly see it as green in Japan, even though it's black!
