Susato:
We are on a study tour of Great Britain...with the intention of learning the country's legal practices.

最新の司法を研究するためには実際に、法廷に立つ必要がございます。

Susato:
In order to research the latest court procedures here, we need as much court experience as possible.

ナルホド:
え。ええ····そうなんでしょうけどね。でも····

Ryunosuke:
Well, yes, I suppose that's true, but...

被告人にとっては、一生に一度····それで人生が決まるかもしれません。

Ryunosuke:
...for the person in the dock, it may well be his or her one and only time in court. And it could be life-changing.

I had no idea my case was such a notorious affair here in London.

The trial two days ago marked Lord van Zieks's return to the courtroom after a very long hiatus.

Well, lest we also forget the fact that it could spark an international incident.

Obviously, the reappearance of this infamous prosecutor has caught people's attention.

After all, at our previous encounter, the defendant was found to be innocent.

Van Zieks:
Very recently, Great Britain signed an alliance with a rising power in the Far East.

バンジークス:
その島国より訪れた留学生こそ、被告人 “ナツメ・ソーセキ” である。

Van Zieks:
The accused in the dock today is a student from that same land. A certain Mr Soseki Natsume.

バンジークス:
我が大英帝国は、留学生を歓迎し、手厚くもてなした····しかし。

Van Zieks:
And while our country has extended this foreign student the warmest of welcomes...

残念ながら。留学生は、帝都において恐るべき凶行に走ったのである。

Van Zieks:

Of plunging a knife into the back of an innocent woman who was doing nothing but walking down the street!

Juror No. 1:
A knife crime?! I tell you from bitter experience, those are the worst! Bloody oath, they are!

Just look at that sallow complexion and short stature... He's, he's one of those dreadful 'Japanese'!

Van Zieks:
Allow me to call the first witness to the stand.

サイバンチョ:

Judge:
Very well.

サイバンチョ:
それでは。現場の捜査の指揮をとった刑事をここへ!

Judge:
Bailiff, lead the inspector in, please!

バンジークス:
····証人。名前と職業を。

Van Zieks:
Your name and occupation, please.

グレグソン:
はッ!

Gregson:
Yes, sir.

グレグソン:
名前は、トバイアス・グレグソン。《倫敦警視庁スコットランドヤード》の刑事であります。

Gregson:
Tobias Gregson, Detective Inspector at Scotland Yard.

バンジークス:
····それでは、刑事。事件について、説明をおねがいしよう。

Van Zieks:
Would you please summarise the events of the case for the court, Inspector?

グレグソン:
被害者は、ビリジアン・グリーンという20代の若い女性と思われます。

Gregson:
The victim is thought to be a young woman in her twenties by the name of Olive Green.

サイバンチョ:
ちょっと、待ちなさい! “思われます” ····というのは?

Judge:
I beg your pardon, Inspector? 'Thought to be'?

グレグソン:
被害者は、凶器のナイフで背中を刺されたのですが····

Gregson:
Yes, havin' been stabbed in the back by her attacker's knife, the victim fell unconscious.

グレグソン:
事件から3日たった、今もまだ、意識が戻っていないのです。

Gregson:
That was three days ago now. And she's been comatose ever since.

ナルホド:
な。なんですって····! (そんなことが····)

Ryunosuke:
What?! (So they don't even know who she is for sure?)

サイバンチョ:
“意識不明” ····ですか。イノチに別状はないのですかな?

Judge:
Hm, comatose... I see. But her life is not in danger?

バンジークス:
····幸運なことに。極東の留学生は《殺人》の罪は、まぬがれたようである。

Van Zieks:
Fortunately for the Eastern student, the charge will not be murder.

バンジークス:
グレグソン刑事よ。····詳しい事件の説明を命ずる。

Van Zieks:
Pray, elaborate on the details, Inspector.

グレグソン:
はッ。では、事件が起こった現場付近の《地図》をごらんください!

Gregson:
Sir. If I could ask everyone to look at this street map...

グレグソン:
事件が起こったのは、3日前。····夕刻の、5時ごろのことでした。

Gregson:
As I mentioned, the incident took place three days ago. ...At around five in the afternoon.

グレグソン:
現場となったのは、ブライヤーロードの広い馬車道を挟む《歩道》です。

Gregson:
It happened on the pavement running alongside Briar Road, a wide thoroughfare for horse-drawn vehicles.

グレグソン:
被害者のグリーン嬢は、雪のやんだばかりの歩道を歩いていたのですが····

Gregson:
It had not long since stopped snowin' as the victim - Miss Green - was walkin' down the street.

グレグソン:
そのとき。背後から忍び寄った被告人に、ナイフで刺されました。

Gregson:
Out of the blue, she was approached from behind by the accused and stabbed in the back.

グレグソン:
さいわい、被害者は一命をとりとめて、現在は市内の病院に入院中ですが····

Gregson:
Luckily, the young lady's life was spared, and she's currently bein' treated in one of the city's hospitals.

グレグソン:
今も意識不明の状態がつづいており、本人の《証言》は聞けない状態です。

Gregson:
But bein' unconscious as she is, we've been unable to take a statement from her, of course.

グレグソン:
····こちらが、被害者の資料になります。

Gregson:
This is the case file with everything we know about the victim so far.

サイバンチョ:

Judge:
Thank you, Inspector. The court will accept the documents as evidence, if you please.

Van Zieks:
What of the weapon that was used?

グレグソン:
は。····コチラになります。被害者の背中に刺さっていました。

Gregson:
Sir. I have that here. It was removed from the victim's back.

ナルホド:
(····大きなナイフだな。できることなら、刺さりたくない)

Ryunosuke:
(Ouch. That big thing is starting to make me scared to walk down the street now...)

スサト:
あれほど重そうなナイフであれば。チカラのない者でも、犯行が可能です。

Susato:
With a heavy blade like that, almost anybody would have been able to stab the poor woman.

ナルホド:
(····つまり。非力ひりきそうな漱石そうせきさんでも “可能” ということか····)

Ryunosuke:
(Even the scragged-looking Soseki-san, I suppose...)

サイバンチョ:
ふむう····これは、どこにでもありそうなナイフですな。

Judge:
Hm... A common-or-garden jackknife, I would say. Rather nondescript.

サイバンチョ:
····よろしい。《証拠品》として受理します。

Judge:
Thank you, Inspector. The court accepts the blade as evidence.

証拠品《凶器のナイフ》のデータを法廷記録にファイルした。

The jackknife has been entered into the Court Record.

サイバンチョ:
それで····犯人の目的は? やはり、金品を奪うため····ですかな?

Judge:
Now then...what do we know of the motive? Money or valuables, I presume?

グレグソン:
持ち物から察するに。被害者は、貧しい学生のようです。

Gregson:
From what we can tell by looking at the woman's possessions, it seems like she's a poor student herself.

グレグソン:
奪うほどの “金品” は持っていなかったと思われます。

Gregson:
Hard to imagine she would have had anythin' much worth pinchin', My Lord.

サイバンチョ:
それでは····犯人は、被害者をタイヘン恨んでいた····ですかな?

Judge:
I see. Well, in that case, are we looking at some deep-seated resentment toward the victim?

グレグソン:

Gregson:

Ryunosuke:
And how are we supposed to believe in some phantom attacker that nobody could see?

ナルホド:

That's right. Took me the whole day and they paid me a measly tuppence for it!

道路に穴があいたら、馬車は通れねえし、気どった紳士淑女は “回り道” をするが。

No coaches would have had a hope of passing anyway, and we just turn any gentlefolk back when they come.

下町ッ子たちは、気にせずピョイと飛び越してましたぜ。

下宿に戻る際に、ブライヤーロードを通ったのは、疑う余地などない。

Van Zieks:

Ryunosuke:

We've been told on several occasions that there were eye witnesses to the incident.

Ryunosuke:
Yes, I remember. One of them being a Scotland Yard policeman, no less.

スサト:

I'm afraid that's likely to be the prosecution's next witness.

ナルホド:
(たとえ、どんな《証人》が、どんな証言をしたとしても····)

Ryunosuke:

Indeed, apart from rare days off, our gallant officers trudge some twenty miles a day, you know.
