Episode III
The Adventure of The Runaway Room

記録を読み返すと、あれは19世紀の終わり····厳しい冬のことだった。

Glancing over my records of the late last century, I am faced by the events of a certain bitter winter.

事件は霧深い、深夜の倫敦ロンドンの街路をひた走る《乗合馬車》の中で起こった。

A murder in a carriage as it sped through dense London fog in the dead of night -

馬車には、被害者と容疑者の両名のみ。複数の人間が、その事件を目撃した。

Though the victim and the perpetrator were the only ones inside, there were multiple witnesses to the crime itself.

····いったい。誰が想像しただろうか。この “単純” きわまりない事件が····

However, none could have imagined at the time that such a seemingly obvious case as this

あのような、恐ろしい《結末》を迎えることになろうとは。

would end in such a horrendous manner.

我が友、シャーロック・ホームズはあの事件を振り返って、こう言った。

My friend, Mr Herlock Sholmes, once said of the incident,

「思えば····あの事件こそは “序曲” だったのかもしれないね」

'I believe that perhaps that case was indeed the "prelude" -

「忘れがたき、あの日本人留学生と演じた、長い《協奏曲》の始まりだ」

the beginning of a long concerto that impressive Japanese student and I were to play together.'

すごい····こ。これって。本当に····駅、なのでしょうか。

Amazing... Is...is this really just a railway station?

駅にせよ、違うにせよ····これほどの建造物は見たことがございませんね。

Railway station or not, I've never seen such an enormous building before.

蒸気機関車が、あんなにたくさん。

And look at all the steam locomotives.

なんなんだ、この国は····

This country is incredible.

わあ····

Wah...

なんだか、夢みたいです。

I feel like...like I'm dreaming.

これが、大英帝国の帝都····

So this...is the capital of Great Britain...

アンタたち!

So...where to?

(····まるで『城塞』のようだ····)

Ryunosuke:
(This place is breathtaking...! It looks like a fortress!)

スサト:
日本が、世界へ門を開いたあの《開国》から、数十年····

Susato:
There are some stone buildings like this in Japan now, of course.

スサト:
最近は、我が国でも “石の建物” を見かけるようになりましたが····

Susato:
But they've only been built in the few short decades since we opened our borders to the outside world.

スサト:
やはり。“本場” のハクリョクはまったく違うのでございますね。

Susato:
An authentic example like this has quite a different impact, wouldn't you agree?

スサト:
“木” と “紙” でこしらえた日本の家とは、なにもかもが異質でございます。

Susato:
A far cry from the wood and paper most of our buildings are constructed from.

ナルホド:

It's certainly...unfamiliar...

ナルホド:

(...But I think there's more to the differences than just construction materials...)

スサト:
大英帝国高等法院、首席判事閣下の執務室でございます。

Susato:
This is the Lord Chief Justice's office, Naruhodo-san. In the Supreme Court of Great Britain.

ナルホド:
首席判事····

Ryunosuke:
The Lord Chief Justice...

スサト:
本来ならば····本日、この時間。

Susato:
We had instructions to report here at this time. If...circumstances were different...

スサト:
我が国の司法留学生が、倫敦ロンドンへの “到着” を報告するはずでございました。

Susato:
...we were supposed to let the Lord Chief Justice know that we had arrived from Japan.

ナルホド:
··············でも。亜双義は、もういない····

Ryunosuke:
......... But Kazuma can't.

スサト:
····はい。

Susato:
No...

スサト:
したがって、わたしたちの現在の “身分” は····

Susato:
So instead, we are here in a different capacity.

スサト:
一真さまの “死” を報告する、《使者》····ということになります。

Susato:
As envoys, to report the news of Kazuma-sama's death.

ナルホド:
《使者》····ですか。

Ryunosuke:
Yes...

スサト:
《使者》は、その使命を果たせば、すみやかに戻らなければなりません。

Susato:
And having delivered his or her message, an envoy's duty is done.

ナルホド:

Ryunosuke:

スサト:
つまり。わたしたちが、この国にとどまるためには····

Susato:
If we want to remain here in Great Britain...

ナルホド:
ぼくが、かわりの “司法留学生” になるしかないワケですね。

Ryunosuke:
...I have to take Kazuma's place as the law student selected for the study tour.

スサト:
そして。今回の留学生の資格は、《弁護士》であること、でございます。

Susato:
Yes. Which means you need the requisite qualifications as a lawyer.

ナルホド:
《弁護士》····

Ryunosuke:
Which is what I've been studying for.

スサト:
大英帝国では、《弁護士》は首席判事が任命するそうでございます。

Susato:
Here in Great Britain, it is the Lord Chief Justice who appoints lawyers.

ちなみに。先ほど言ったことは、冗談でもなんでもない。

この被告人の弁護を引き受ける者は····本当に、誰もいないのだ。

The defendant in this case has literally no one to advocate for him.

ヴォルテックス:
このままでは、弁護士が不在のまま開廷することになるだろう。

Stronghart:
At this point, he can't hope to find someone to represent him. The trial will begin without a defence.

····そして。そうなれば。間違いなく····

And if that happens, there's only one possible outcome.

そこに待っているのは。“最悪な結末” 以外、あり得ない。

He will receive the most severe sentence the judge can pass down.

いったい、どうしてそのような事態に····!

Susato:
Why does it have to be like this?

なんでも、尋ねればコタエが返ってくると思わないことだ。

スサト:

The cold, hard truth of the matter...

ヴォルテックス:
その被告人の《運命》を変える “可能性” を持っているのは····

Stronghart:
...is that there is only one person now with a chance to save this man from a very miserable end.

ヴォルテックス:
現時点で、もう貴君しかいない。····それは断言しておこう。

You said it wasn't an easy decision to choose whether to defend a man in these circumstances. And I agree.

ヴォルテックス:
それは純粋に《覚悟》の問題である。····私なら、そう考える。

But in my estimation...it is purely and simply a matter of resolve.

開廷まで、あと15分。なんとか、間に合いましたね。

Susato:
Oh, thank goodness, we're in time. There's still fifteen minutes until the trial begins.

ナルホド:
馬車って、あんなに速く走れるのですね。····舌を噛んで死ぬかと思いました。

Ryunosuke:
I never knew a horse-drawn carriage could go so fast! I thought my teeth were going to rattle loose!

スサト:
《シャーロック・ホームズ》の物語に、こんな “お決まり” の台詞せりふがあります。

Susato:
Did you hear what I said to the driver when we climbed aboard?

スサト:
『御者ぎょしゃくん。目的地まで5分で行けたら金貨をはずむよ』····というのですが。

Susato:
'Get us to our destination in five minutes, driver, and there's a guinea in it for you!'

スサト:
····実際に言ってみると、あのような “走り” になるのでございますね。

Susato:
It's one of my favourite lines from the Herlock Sholmes stories! And it worked quite perfectly!

ナルホド:
死ぬ思いをして、しかも金貨を取られるとは、ワリに合わない気がします。

Ryunosuke:
I'm not sure why you're so pleased. I thought we were going to die, AND we had to pay gold for the privilege.

スサト:
でも。こうして裁判が始まる前に到着したではありませんか。

Susato:
Well, at least we arrived here before the trial started.

ナルホド:
まあ····そうですけど。

Ryunosuke:
Yes...I suppose there's that.

スサト:
それにしても····ヘンでございますね。

Susato:

係官さまが、おっしゃっていたのですが。····見あたりません。

This place gives me the same sense of foreboding that I remember from the Supreme Court in Japan.

ナルホド:
これから裁かれる者が押しつぶされそうな緊張感····

Ryunosuke:
An oppresive air... Almost as if the building itself is going to crush whoever is about to be sentenced.

ナルホド:
(····ぼく自身、その空気を味わったばかりだからな····)

Ryunosuke:
(It feels like only yesterday that I was the one about to be crushed...)

スサト:
きっと。心細い気分を味わっているのでございましょうね。

Susato:
Yes, whoever the man you're to defend is, I imagine he's feeling very alone at this moment...

····おや! そこのあなた。

???:
...Top of the mornin' to ya, madam! ...Sir.

???:
こんなトコロまで来たというコトは。かなりお困りなのでしょうな!
